With spring in full force now is the time to get your planting bed in shape with a crisp bed edge.  I enjoy seeing trench edging on planting beds, it gives the planting beds around your home a nice clean look for the season.

When installing a window box planter, make sure you are choosing a box that is at least 6 inches deep WITH drainage holes.  Mount the planter under the window ledge; the box should be the same width as the window.  Metal or wood brackets screwed into the wall's studs offer the best support.  Fill the box 3/4 full of potting soil.  Select plants in a 4 inch nursery stock pot for instant impact.  Feed plants weekly with a soluable fertilizer throughout the growing season.

Hostas are beautiful plants but have a tendency to get rather large as they grow.  This is when they can be divided.  I like to divide mine in the spring before they leaf out so that I can see the plants without the leaves on them.  The best way to do this is to take a shovel and cut the clumps out where the tips of the plant separate and then to move them to your new space and replant.

Generally tulip bulbs only need watered once a month while below ground (one a week once sprouted and blooming).  Most of the time we don't really have to worry about it since Kansas usually gets enough rain and snow.  Considering the small amount of snow we had recently, followed by the large amount of rain, they should be fine.  The worst thing you can do is overwater- which will cause the bulbs to rot out.  Another big factor is the drainage of the site where the bulbs are planted.  You should start to see them popping up anytime now!

Ornamental Grasses and Shrub Roses should be pruned now for better performance this season.

Grasses should be:

Cut down to approx. 6-12" mound (depending on size).  **Tip- Tie twine or wrap tape around the grass before you shear them.  Doing this will ensure an even trim and gets rid of the cleanup!

Shrub Roses should be:

Cut down to approx. 12-20" (depending on size).  Concentrate on thinning the roses out to 4-8 main, largest stems.  Remove all the dead (black wood).  Don't be afraid to get aggressive with your plant, it will respond tremendously if it is thinned out and cut back.

Call the office if you have questions.

Plant some of this pansy variety-- perfectly reflecting your team's colors.  Referred to by most nurseries as simply "Yellow pansy with black face/sploch".  Can't get easier than that!  Pick some up this weekend.....Just in time for the big game on Saturday night!

During the fall season, I always like to extend my love for college football out into my planting beds.  Being a K-state alumni, my beds are filled with purple and white.  'Blue Ice' and 'Ocean Breeze' mixes both offer shades of purple and white plus some flowers that are white with purple faces are always in the blend.  Willy the Wildcat would definitely approve!
