Have you ever gazed out of the kitchen window at your beautiful wildlife garden on a cold winter’s day?  It looks so barren and lonely.  Have you ever wondered where the butterflies go during this time of year?

As humans, we get to bundle up in our fuzzy flannels and spend the winter months indoors all snug in our homes, drinking hot chocolate. But what about the butterflies – our delicate winged wonders?

To Stay or to Go…that is the question

The gradual arrival of cooler nights, combined with the shorter daylight hours of the autumn season, signals all members of the insect kingdom to prepare for the onset of winter. Many of us are familiar with the most famous traveler of the butterfly family, the Monarch. The Monarch butterflies in North America that emerge during the fall season do not attempt to find a mate. Instead, they eat as much nectar as they can, in order to store up energy reserves in their body. Then those that were born East of the Rocky Mountains fly south all the way to Mexico to spend the winter in a warmer climate.

Tropicals are expensive to replace every year so if you have some you really like you can overwinter them in your house or basement.  Most tropicals will overwinter with minimal care all that is required is to water once a month and make sure they recieve some light.  Light can be provided naturally or by artifical lighting.

The bald cypress is a common tree used in wet areas in Kansas it  grows best in acidic soil but is adaptable to other conditions. It grows well in full sun and can adapt to wet or dry conditions. The bald cypress tree grows in zones 4 through 10 on the U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zone map.

Mature Height
This stately tree can reach between 50 and 70 feet when mature. A full grown bald cypress can have a spread up to 25 feet.

Physical Characteristics
The bald cypress is a deciduous, coniferous tree whose leaves are semi-evergreen. The tree grows in a pyramidal shape and is widely known for the "knees" that grow on its trunk.

We have recently been recieving phone calls about yellowing and browning of these trees, the good news is most cases all they need is to supplement thier water since they usaully grow best in wet conditions.

Due to the extreme heat and drought trees need an extra drink.   Although most people feel the irrigation is enough its not, deep watering is the key and will keep your tree from early dormany and in some cases death.  You should be watering trees 1 to 2 times a week with a hose for 20 minutes on a trickel with the hosed placed 2 to 3ft away from the trunk .

Lirope is consider the  bullet-proof  by most gardners but dry weather and  excessive watering creates new problem. We are seeing a new disease  described as crown rot, caused by Phytophthora palmivora. The disease is exacerbated by wet soil so don’t do any irrigation for the rest of the summer. Fungicide drenches can control the disease but they are too expensive to consider

Annual flowers only have a 4 month life span but they should be fertilized 2 times after planting.  All of our flowers are planted with a slow release fertilize but we recommend two applications of liquid fertilizer.  The first application should take place in June and the second in August, its best to use products like miracle grow or super thrive. Please feel free to call the office if you have any questions.

When installing a window box planter, make sure you are choosing a box that is at least 6 inches deep WITH drainage holes.  Mount the planter under the window ledge; the box should be the same width as the window.  Metal or wood brackets screwed into the wall's studs offer the best support.  Fill the box 3/4 full of potting soil.  Select plants in a 4 inch nursery stock pot for instant impact.  Feed plants weekly with a soluable fertilizer throughout the growing season.
