Watering New Installed Shrubs

Newly planted shrubs require more water than established shrubs that have been planted for at least one year. During the first growing season, a small sized shrub transplanted from a 1-5 gallon container will require 4 to 6 gallons per week depending on soil type.  A reliable rule of thumb is to check the moisture level in the soil with your finger.  If the soil is dry and hot to the touch the shrub requires watering.  If the soil is cool and moist to the touch the shrub has an adequate amount of water.  If the soil is completely saturated with water the shrub is over watered.
